WordPress is an open source CMS. Cafelog or b2 was the precursor to Word Press. The name ‘Word Press’ was suggested by Christine Selleck and a joint effort between Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little created Word Press in 2003. According to CMS Market Share Report, by October, 2009, it was enjoying the greatest brand strength in CMS Systems.

A very interesting fact about Word Press is after version 1.0 most Word Press releases are code named after famous jazz musicians!

FEATURES

The best thing about Word Press is that its templating system including widgets that can be rearranged without editing HTML or PHP code and also the themes that is installed, but the codes can be edited in the themes for advanced customization. It features integrated link management, its search engine friendly, has a clean permalink structure, it is able to assign multiple nested categories to articles. It also enables automatic filters that provide proper styling and formatting text in articles. The Trackback and Pingback standards display links to other sites which are linked to a post. A rich plug-in architecture is what Word Press has which allow developers to stretch its functionality beyond the features of a base install. Word Press can be installed by Microsoft Web Platform Installer which installs Windows and IIS and Web PI automatically detects missing dependencies as PHP and My SQL, these have to be first installed before installing Word Press. Native applications exist that for I Phone /iPod Touch, Android and BlackBerry which provide access to some features in   Word Press Admin panel and also work with WordPress.com and WordPress.org blogs

Now Word Press 3.0 or Word Press Multi-User (WPMU) was created to allow multiple blogs exist within one installation that enables being administered by a centralized maintainer. It’s good news for those of you who have their own website for hosting their own blogging community.
