India Flourishing in OPEN SOURCE TECHNOLOGY

Open source are practices in development and production promoting access to end products source material. It’s often considered as pragmatic methodology. The new three-word phrase “open source software” describes the environment that the new copy right, licensing , domain and consumer issues are created. The term open-source software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free software .The concept of open source and sharing of technological information existed long before computers and software technology. Early examples of open source include IBM’s source releases of its own operating system in the 1950s and 1960s, and the SHARE user group that facilitated the exchange of software’s. In the early 2000s, a number of companies published a portion of their source code to claim that they were open source, keeping key parts closed. This led to the development of terms like: free open source software and commercial open source software to distinguish between truly open and hybrid open source.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

Most economists are of the view that open source candidates have ‘knowledge good’ aspect. The cost of reproducing the work is very low, so additional users may be added at zero or near zero cost — this is the marginal cost of a product. Considering the idea of copyright for works of authorship is to safeguard the incentive of making these original works. Thus, they will have to pay an access cost of the difference.

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit organization formed to educate about the benefits of open source and to build bridges among different constituencies in open-source community.

Open Source Licenses are categorized under two terms

License by name and license by category and the latter is further sub divided in Reciprocal Public License and Open Group Test Suite License.

License Review Process:

The purpose of the OSI License Review Process is to ensure that licenses and software labeled as “open source” conforms to existing community norms and expectation. So, all licenses must go through a public review process
